Robert Bolyard comes from Los Angeles, California, where he was born, raised, homeschooled, high-schooled and colleged. He attended Occidental College, where he majored in music with a conducting emphasis. After undergrad, he attended Yale to get his Master’s degree in Choral Conducting.
Since moving to Atlanta in 2008 when his husband, Andrew, started a Ph.D. at Georgia Tech, Robert has been the Music Director at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Conyers, Georgia. Since 2010, he has been the Organist there. He also has an active studio of piano, cello and voice students of all ages.
Robert began taking classes with Automatic Improv in the summer of 2011, and after a period of time spent workshopping with the group and dabbling in musical improvisation, he has been the group’s musical improviser since August of 2012. In April of 2013, he ventured across town, starting to perform as a musical improviser at Dad’s Garage as well.
When he’s not at the piano at an Automatic Improv show or workshop, Robert spends his time laughing at his husband’s jokes, cuddling with their cat, Margo, knitting scarves/hats/shawls/toys/anything and cross-stitching little scenes from video games. He also sings with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus, and is the founding artistic director of the chamber vocal ensemble Uncommon Practice.
