Robert Bolyard is our favorite musician. When he’s not directing choirs or teaching private piano lessons, Robert performs as Automatic Improv’s one-man band As Per Usual. Using the latest in questioneering technology, we’ve delved deep into the musical mind of Robert Bolyard.
Name: Robert James Dana Glennon Saper-Bolyard (it rarely comes up, but that is actually my full legal name….I’ll show you my birth certificate)
Age: One score and seven
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
What’s your nickname? My favorite was when a choir I worked with collectively named me “Lolyard” for my propensity to use meme-culture references in rehearsal.
Favorite improv game? Obviously anything that uses music as an integral component, but my favorites are Silent Scene, Ballet, and Performance Art – things where the music and the stagework are really equal players – it’s like I’m on stage moving around with the players and I love that.
Best suggestion you’ve ever received? A few times we’ve gotten things like “roaring 20s”, “tap dancing” or “Broadway show”….I will play ragtime/swing/songs-from-the-hit-shows at the drop of a hat!!
What makes you laugh? My husband, all the time. Literally all the time.
What’s your theme song? GTPWTW
Describe yourself in 3 words: acerbic, boisterous, and cerebral (I could go on and use the rest of the alphabet if you like)
Favorite fictional character? Definitely Calvin from the Calvin & Hobbes comics – they were my favorite things to read when I was a kid and to this day I love them dearly. (I tried to think of a more highbrow answer, but that’s the truth….)
Where are you on the D&D alignment chart? Neutral Good I guess because I’m a pretty nice guy but also lazy….?
What’s your biggest pet peeve? People who think they are interesting when in fact they aren’t really. Never has this reached more epidemic proportions than on Facebook….ugh.
Are you a cat person or a dog person? A cat person. How could you say no to this face?
If you could play any sitcom character, who would it be and why? I swear I’m not just trying to find the gayest answer possible, but I think I would be Delta Burke’s character on Designing Women: Suzanne was always the center of attention, arguably the most glamorous, and definitely large and in charge. (now if I could just learn how to twirl a baton….) Although I also have quite literally every line of dialogue from Arrested Development memorized, so I could be any one of them in a pinch. (Even if it means me taking a chubby, I will suck it up)
What’s your dream job now? Faculty wife. My husband is studying for a Ph.D. and I can’t wait to stay home and take care of our future kids.
Drug of choice? I have an amaretto sour every now and then, but that’s about it. (did I mention that I was born an old lady?)
Most visited website? Easily Facebook – you’d think it was my job.
What do you do when you’re not improvising? I play the organ and direct the choirs at a medium-sized Lutheran church in Conyers, GA, and I have about thirty private students (voice, piano, and cello) that I see every week. Plus I sing in a bunch of choirs and knit constantly (as my very patient husband will tell you….again: me = old lady.)
What’s your motto? That’s easy: give the people what they want! (or #gtpwtw for short)
